Voice chat servers have long had a "push to talk" feature that only sends your audio when you're holding a send key.

Has anyone ever implemented something like that for video conferencing? Just making the idea of "I don't want my video constantly streamed" a first-class feature?

Also: *why* is it constantly out-of-date? Does it break compatibility with every minor release? Is the plugin updating itself automatically, but not also updating the binary automatically?

i.e.: It seems like if it has stopped working because the binary is out-of-date, it should somehow ... tell me? Before me randomly trying a restart?

When using rust-analyzer in #VSCode, I often run into this:

1. Code intelligence broken, think I'm doing something wrong for N minutes
2. Restart VSCode
3. Prompted to download new version of rust-analyzer
4. Things work again 🎉

Is there a way to avoid #1?

The first time I used a web browser in a GUI, I got what the big deal was.

I don’t remember the program but it operated by first downloading images to a Unix shell, then downloading them to my computer with zmodem. I’m not sure if SLIP or PPP existed yet - I didn’t have either.

I first used the Lynx browser in a terminal over dialup. I don’t remember if it was 2400 baud or 14.4kbps. But I think it was 2400 because that’s what worked with our Macintosh Classic.

I remember being unimpressed. Gopher still seemed simpler and faster to navigate.

TIL: #QRCode allows multiple encodings (ex: kanji/byte/alphanumeric/numeric) in one QRCode.

Also, JSON Web Signatures limits characters to 100 values. So each character can be encoded as 2 "numeric" characters.

@cpratt @Blithe In the meantime I got nerdsniped into skimming the technical specification for the data format in the QR code you get:
https://spec.smarthealth.cards/

Looks like they're cryptographically verifiable so more difficult to forge than those little paper cards.

@isntitvacant I’ve been doing that for the last few months. It’s “fun” running into all the windows-specific bugs that other devs don’t hit since they’re elsewhere. 😬

Ex: https://github.com/NfNitLoop/feoblog/issues/16

(Tho TBH it’s a welcome change in my lifetime that Windows is the minority dev platform.)

The ants around our new apartment seem very invasive, even when there’s no food to be found near their trails. Have used peppermint oil to encourage them to go elsewhere twice and it’s worked surprisingly well.
