A brief history of Elon Musk sabotaging Matt Levine’s time off

A magenta-hued photograph of Elon Musk against a wavy illustrated background.

“My life has not been ruined by having to write about Elon Musk on Saturdays.” | Laura Normand / The Verge

This story, originally published October 28th, 2022, has been updated because, well, you are never going to guess what happened.

Matt Levine would like you to know that Elon Musk does not actually ruin all of his vacations. Sure, he was at Sesame Place, the theme park just outside Philadelphia, with his kids when Musk announced his Twitter bid, and then stayed up until midnight that night to get his newsletter, Money Stuff, out. But that was kind of fun! “My life has not been ruined by having to write about Elon Musk on Saturdays,” the former mergers and acquisitions lawyer told me. And in M&A, everything happens on the weekend.

The main problem, actually, was that he was working on a 40,000-word Bloomberg Businessweek story about...

One of the best ways to play games on your phone just got a whole lot cheaper thanks to an Amazon Prime Day Lightning Deal. The Backbone One controller for Android is currently on sale for a very nice $69.99 ($30 off) at Amazon in either PlayStation (white) or Xbox (black) flavors. You can take your pick based on control layout, though they work the same way. By plugging into just about any current Android phone’s USB-C port, you get native physical controls for compatible mobile games or games streamed via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PlayStation Remote Play, or Steam Link.

The Backbone One can give you a competitive edge (or it allows you to cheat, depending on who you ask) in mobile games as well as a traditional controller layout with...

Microsoft just won a big legal fight with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to allow it to close its $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition. After a grueling five days of evidence and testimony, a US federal judge has sided with Microsoft to prevent the FTC from securing a preliminary injunction to halt Microsoft from buying Activision Blizzard.

The hearing involved key Xbox executives, including Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. The Xbox chief has written to Microsoft employees about today’s FTC result, noting that the company’s focus is now on resolving the situation with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Both Microsoft and the CMA have agreed to pause their legal battle to negotiate a potential remedy after...

Right now, you can buy the stylish pair of wireless earbuds at Amazon for $149.99 ($20 off) as part of Amazon Prime Day, which is the first discount we’ve seen on them since they made their debut in May. Both Best Buy and Target are also matching Amazon’s price, if you’re not a Prime member.

The Studio Buds Plus are a big improvement over their predecessor, the Beats Studio Buds, with the most noticeable difference being their appearance. The new earbuds now come in a fun translucent option, one that’s reminiscent of the throng of transparent gadgets we saw during the late-’90s. If...

The Ahsoka series’ latest trailer is one big, rebellious reunion

Ahead of the live-action Ahsoka series upcoming at the end of August, Disney’s dropped a new trailer detailing how Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano will cross paths with a number of familiar faces from Star Wars Rebels, including one very important villain.

Much like Ahsoka herself, Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson) is no Jedi in Ahsoka’s new trailer that spotlights how he sends his apprentice Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) after the series’ eponymous Togruta at a time when Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) is plotting to return to power. With Thrawn back on the playing field and Baylan meaning to ally himself with the villainous tactician, heroes like Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) are...

Intel’s NUC computers are super compact, upgradable, and even powerful — but now, they’re being discontinued. ServeTheHome first reported that Intel is giving up on the personal computer business and will no longer be making its cute small form factor PCs.

In an email to The Verge, Intel’s EMEA comms manager of client computing and graphics, Mark Walton, confirmed the news and issued the following statement:

We have decided to stop direct investment in the Next Unit of Compute (NUC) Business and pivot our strategy to enable our ecosystem partners to continue NUC innovation and growth. This decision will not impact the remainder of Intel’s Client Computing Group (CCG) or Network and Edge Computing (NEX) businesses. Furthermore, we are...

Amazon claims it’s been ‘unfairly singled out’ by the EU’s digital content rules

A circle of 12 gold stars representing the European Union.

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Amazon doesn’t believe it fits the definition of a “very large online platform” — at least not how the European Union defines it.

The retail giant is taking legal action to challenge the EU’s new content moderation rules for big tech companies, claiming that the company is being unfairly targeted by the legislation. On Tuesday, Amazon filed a petition with the EU’s General Court to request that the European Commission annul its decision to designate Amazon as a “very large online platform” (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA), arguing that the company doesn’t meet the requirements to fall under such a category.

“The DSA was designed to address systemic risks posed by very large companies with advertising as their primary revenue...

Wonka’s first trailer is a whimsical origin story

Timothée Chalamet in Wonka.

Image: Warner Bros. Pictures

It’s going to be a busy holiday for Timothée Chalamet fans. Not long after he reprises his role as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two, we’ll get to see him in something very different: as Willy Wonka in a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The new flick is simply called Wonka, and we got our first proper look at the fantasy musical in a new trailer today, which shows Chalamet’s Wonka setting out to become a master chocolatier, while dealing with hurdles like a chocolate cartel and fines for daydreaming.

Chalamet is an interesting choice for the role, which is closely associated with Gene Wilder, who played Wonka in the original film adaptation from 1971 and passed away in 2016. Tim Burton also tried his hand at adapting the novel...

Microsoft and UK regulators agree to pause their Activision battle to negotiate

The Microsoft Xbox game logo against a green and black background.

Microsoft and the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) have both agreed to pause their legal battle over the proposed Activision Blizzard acquisition in order to further negotiate. Microsoft has just won a separate ruling with a US federal court against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the CMA is the last regulator preventing the Xbox maker from completing its $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard deal.

The UK regulator moved to block Microsoft’s proposed acquisition in April, and Microsoft was due to appeal that decision with a hearing set to start on July 28th. Microsoft has now agreed with the CMA to pause its appeal process to look at how the transaction could be modified to address the CMA’s cloud gaming concerns.

Microsoft wins FTC fight to buy Activision Blizzard

A California judge is allowing Microsoft to close its acquisition of Activision Blizzard after five days of grueling testimony. Microsoft still faces an ongoing antitrust case by the Federal Trade Commission, but Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley has listened to arguments from both the FTC and Microsoft and decided to deny the regulator’s request for a preliminary injunction.

In a ruling submitted today, Judge Corley said the following:

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision has been described as the largest in tech history. It deserves scrutiny. That scrutiny has paid off: Microsoft has committed in writing, in public, and in court to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for 10 years on parity with Xbox. It made an agreement with Nintendo to...

Discord is making it easier for parents to keep track of what their teens are up to in the app

The Discord logo.

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Discord is introducing a new tool called Family Center that lets parents better understand who their teens are talking to on the platform. Importantly, a teen has to opt in to let their parents see what they are doing.

If a teen opts in, their parent or guardian will be able to see recently added friends, servers they’ve joined or participated in, and the display names and avatars of people they’ve messaged or called in DMs or group DMs. All of this data will show up on a new Family Center dashboard, which shows a teen’s activity over the past seven days. Parents will also get the data in a weekly email summary. However, parents will not be able to see what their teen writes or says.

For a parent to connect to their teen’s account,...

Can banks push Bitcoin to clean up its act?

It’s time for banks and asset managers to start pushing Bitcoin to clean up its pollution, Greenpeace argues in a new report. The environmental organization wants to see Bitcoin change its code to slash energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a big ask, but Greenpeace argues that financial institutions could have an outsize influence on the Bitcoin network through its business dealings.

“The report focused on nine major financial institutions that are providing the glue that keeps the Bitcoin ecosystem together,” says Joshua Archer, who leads Greenpeace USA’s Bitcoin campaign. “Financial institutions have an important responsibility, but they’re currently ignoring the severity of the problem.”

“The report focused on nine...
