The first laptop with LPCAMM2 memory is finally here. The folks at iFixit got their hands on the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 (Gen 7), which uses LPDDR5X memory in an LPCAMM2 module that you can upgrade or replace by simply unscrewing from the laptop’s motherboard.
That’s a major change from existing LPDDR memory in most modern laptops. This type of memory is typically soldered onto the motherboard, making it much more difficult to upgrade. LPCAMM2 — or Low-Power Compression-Attached Memory Module — offers modularity without losing the power efficiency of LPDDR.
Traditional DDR RAM uses SODIMM sticks that slot into the motherboard, much like on desktop PCs. As pointed out by iFixit, LPDDR is much more power-efficient, but it needs to be soldered...

The most important upcoming hardware product for Sonos is undoubtedly its long-anticipated Sonos Ace headphones. They will mark the company’s debut in a massive (and highly competitive) new category. But spring and summer are always the seasons of new portable speakers, and Sonos hasn’t forgotten about that part of its business.
The company has been developing a sequel to the Sonos Roam, the tiny portable speaker it released three years ago. I’ve obtained images of a prerelease Sonos Roam 2 and can share a little more about the differences between it and the original model, which has been criticized by some owners for unreliable battery performance and other issues.
In terms of design, the Roam 2 is basically a carbon copy of the...

Say goodbye to your physical SIM card. | Image: Samar Haddad / The Verge
If you’ve purchased an iPhone 14 or 15 series phone in the US — or one of the latest iPads — you’ll notice it’s missing one key feature: a SIM tray. That’s because Apple’s gone all in on eSIM, which is a digital version of the tiny card that allows you to use your wireless provider’s network.
There’s good news and bad news here. If you’re switching from an older iPhone, activating an eSIM on your new iPhone is incredibly easy. If you’re switching from an Android phone to an iPhone 14, well, it’s less straightforward.
Whichever path you need to take, we’ve got some guidance for you.
To switch from an iPhone with a physical SIM card to an eSIM iPhone, follow these steps:

Amazon is deploying 50 battery-electric heavy-duty trucks in California, which it claims is the largest such fleet in the country. The company says the new trucks represent an important step in its mission to eliminate pollution from its global operations — even as its carbon emissions have spiked in recent years.
Amazon says the trucks will be integrated into first-mile operations, in which goods are moved from container ships at the ports to fulfillment centers, as well as middle-mile operations, in which packages are transported from fulfillment centers to delivery centers. From there, the packages will be loaded into Amazon’s last-mile fleet, a portion of which are electric delivery vans produced by Rivian.

Apple giveth OLED screens, and Apple taketh away... SIM cards. As spotted by 9to5Mac, Apple has removed the physical SIM slot on the cellular versions of the new iPad Air and iPad Pro models. First the iPhone, now the iPad — Apple is all in on an eSIM future, it seems.
The iPhone 14 was the first model to lose the SIM slot, but only in the US — versions sold in other countries still include a physical SIM tray. That doesn’t seem to be the case with the new iPad Air and iPad Pro; Apple’s UK and Canadian retail sites state that the new models use eSIM and are “not compatible with physical SIM cards.”
eSIM has been catching on in popularity over the past few years. Most smartphone flagships support the technology, but only Apple has taken...

Apple has two versions of the M4 chip for the iPad Pro. | Screenshot: Apple
The newly announced iPad Pro hides a sneaky upgrade option that Apple didn’t mention during its event today. When you cough up the $600 it costs to jump from the 256GB base model iPad Pro to the 1TB version, Apple doesn’t just double the RAM along with that — it also puts a faster chip inside, going from a nine-core M4 chip to a 10-core version.
This is the first time Apple has offered a processor upgrade on a specific tablet model — in the past, no matter what other options you picked on a given tablet, you knew you were getting the same chip as any other configuration. In the past, Apple only tied RAM upgrades to storage boosts; that’s still true here, with the quantity doubling from 8GB to 16GB. You also get the privilege of buying...

When I see the word Air attached to an Apple product, I assume two things: it’s going to be thin and light. You can’t really assume that with the just-announced iPad Airs. For one, both the 11-inch and 13-inch sizes are heavier and thicker than either iPad Pro model.

The 13-inch iPad Air is actually heavier than the 10th-gen iPad, too.
The 11-inch Air weighs 1.02 pounds to the 11-inch Pro’s 0.98 pound. The 13-inch Air is 1.36 pounds to the 13-inch Pro’s 1.28 pounds. It’s not just weight, either. Both iPad Pro sizes are also thinner.

At 5.3mm thick for the 11-inch model and 5.1mm for the 13-inch tablet, this new iPad is noticeably thinner and lighter than anything the company has made before.

After rumors of a “true AI-powered device,” the new OLED iPad Pro will include an upgraded M4 chip that’s focused on improving performance for AI-related tasks in iPadOS.
Apple focused heavily on the M4’s AI capabilities, thanks to a new neural engine making it “an outrageously powerful chip for AI,” capable of 38 trillion operators per second (TOPS). It’s supposedly 60 times faster than the A11’s NPU, but that number falls short of the Snapdragon X Elite’s 45 TOPS. However, Apple still claims the M4 can deliver the same performance as the latest PC chips with only a quarter of the power.

According to the email, as first reported by IGN, Booty wrote the reason for the closures was due to a “reprioritization of titles and resources.” Some staff at the affected studios will be relocated while other studios will completely shut down.
Redfall developer Arkane “will close with some members of the team joining other studios to work on projects across Bethesda,” says Booty. Redfall’s previous update will be its last as Microsoft is ending all development on the game. Servers “will remain online for...

One day after an authorized Sonos partner accidentally pulled back the veil on the company’s long-in-the-works headphones, The Verge has learned comprehensive details about the hardware capabilities and software features that will be offered by the Sonos Ace.
As their rumored price of around $450 suggests, Sonos plans to market its first wireless headphones as a premium product that can go toe to toe with the Sony WH-1000XM5, Apple AirPods Max, and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. The company believes it has developed active noise cancellation and transparency modes that can rival the best of the best.
The Ace headphones will offer lossless audio playback over Bluetooth (presumably via AptX Lossless), and they’ll be capable of...

Apparently only donuts could dethrone Delta from the top of Apple’s App Store. Before that, the game emulator had been the most popular app on iOS for two full weeks, after it launched in the wake of an unexpected Apple policy change that finally gave emulators the green light. But the Delta story actually goes back much further. Riley Testut, the developer behind the app, has been working on emulators for a decade, and he’s seen firsthand exactly how the App Store works — and how it’s changing.
On this episode of The Vergecast, Testut joins the show to tell us the full Delta story. He describes his early attempts at building emulators, the first time he almost made it onto the App Store, the process of building the alternative app store...
It is prime time to be a hater right now. The Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef has been a spectacle to watch unfold over the past few days. Lamar is dropping some of the harshest disses of his career, while Drake says “nuh uh” over a beat. I finally understand why Ancient Rome held gladiator fights.

Disney Plus and Hulu posted a profit for the first time today. In Disney’s earnings report released on Tuesday, the company revealed that both streaming services made $47 million combined this past quarter — a huge turnaround from the $587 million loss reported at the same time last year.
But Disney’s streaming business wasn’t entirely profitable. ESPN Plus still lost $65 million, dragging its combined streaming earnings $18 million in the red. Despite this, the narrowing losses mark a huge milestone for Disney as it continues to invest more in streaming. The entertainment company says it expects its streaming business to become profitable in the fourth quarter of this year.
“Our results were driven in large part by our experiences,...

Since I'm here, I'll just add that proprietary software app stores and the like have never been about quality. It's about rapidly and cheaply (in the sense of letting others do the work) creating a "market" a vendor can point at to bolster whatever platform they're shilling. Copying the form and function of these things without thinking through their purpose is likely a mistake.

Yeah, I know nobody says they want to run untrusted code (except maybe the cloud providers), but that's what we've settled on as acceptable.
Anyway, as a computer user, I want [a well put together free software system] so that I can [better trust the code I run].

It feels like everywhere you look, there’s a Mother’s Day sale going on. Many of these promos are pretty meh, but Amazon’s latest sale on Echo devices is worth a look if you’re looking for some relatively inexpensive picks. Right now, for instance, Amazon is throwing in a free smart bulb when you buy the latest Echo Show 8 for $99.99 (about $63 off), which is just $10 shy of its all-time low. Best Buy and Amazon are also selling the display by itself for the same price, along with the third-gen Echo Show 5, which is on sale at Amazon and Best Buy for $64.99 ($25 off).
Like previous models, Amazon’s latest smart displays are versatile gadgets that can pass as digital photo frames, smart home controllers, and alarm clocks. The Show 8 is...

Grocery delivery service Instacart is expanding into restaurant takeout thanks to a new partnership with Uber Eats.
In the coming weeks, Instacart will add a new feature for restaurant delivery, with the back-end mechanics powered by Uber. The listing of restaurants will be provided by Uber, the transaction will be overseen by Uber’s software, and the food will be picked up and delivered by Uber Eats couriers. The only difference is that everything will take place within Instacart’s app or website.

Neither company would share the financial details of the deal, so we don’t have any insight into how much Instacart is paying to use Uber’s food delivery software. Uber spokesperson Noah Edwardsen said that...
