So many white people, when presented with this argument, will respond with a 3rd option. "Maybe Black people just aren't any good".
And they'll say it with a completely straight face. I'm like isn't that what white supremacy is? And they're like "no it's just objective truth."
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:
So I try to present a reasoned argument. If we still see such negative outcomes for Black people despite all of the "advantages" given to us through affirmative action, it means one of 2 things.

@YTLHapax @NicCanziani @FightBairdFight @TroncellitiLaw @MythinformedMKE So if you were being intellectually honest, you'd have to engage with that truth in one of two ways.
1. AfAm doesn't work. And white people's concerns are based on irrational fear.
2. Some other forces exert counterpressure to AfAm. Which is what the professor is addressing.

This is ultimately what I would like to understand better. How many white people are self-aware about the fact that their view of how the world works is based on a foundation of racist assumptions? What does it take to get them to see that? Why wouldn't they want to change that?
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:
Few people are willing to engage in an honest conversation about the disparity in outcomes. When they do, they just fall back on racist talking points. "Black families don't value education so there aren't enough of them to meet diversity quotas".
In reply to:
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:
@YTLHapax @NicCanziani @FightBairdFight @TroncellitiLaw @MythinformedMKE Black Americans still have lower employment, lower average compensation, lower average promotion rates, lower overall wealth, than white people. So I'm asking in a more general sense. Where are the supposed "advantages" outlined here?

A lot of times it devolves into really tortured arguments. Lots of mental gymnastics trying to reconcile the notion that Black people have "advantages" with the reality that it's not born out in outcomes.

@polotek @TroncellitiLaw @MythinformedMKE And, of course, AMERICA is still largely white. Particularly the adult population. It's dishonest to use the overall percents, as young ppl are disproportionately non-white, but over-30 pop is still 70%+ white. Throw in those pesky Asians, and black ppl under-represented...

I decided to dive into this thread today. I knew it would be unlikely to get any kind of useful answers. But ultimately it was pretty instructive for me.
The short version is that many white people misunderstand Affirmative Action and greatly overestimate the impact it has.
