I’m not sure if I’m doing a good job. But I’m trying to give my answer to this basic question. Why do I think white peoples perceptions are unreliable when it comes to racial analysis? Because they do not seek to control their deeply held bias that we are unworthy by default.

Here’s a question that some people may ask themselves. Doesn’t every group want to believe that they’re disadvantaged? Why do we act like Black people’s perceptions are correct while white people’s have to be false? I think it’s a reasonable question. https://twitter.com/polotek/status/1415028789160022017

It crept into so many of the exchanges I had. That feeling of contempt at the very idea that Black people could’ve earned anything we have. It wasn’t clear whether the people saying it even noticed. What they chose to believe had a lot to do with confirming this pre-existing bias

The agency will also end all COVID-19 vaccine events at schools, even though they've mostly served adults. And, if teens get a two-dose vaccine, it won't remind them to go back for their second dose. Teens are intentionally stripped from the mailing list for reminder postcards.

I don’t expect twitter to be the best representation of a wider population. But I do think there is something to be learned from the responses I got to this question. Not just that where people are resentful, but it’s partly because they believe we are undeserving.

We’re surrounded by these things every day and in so many ways. At some point you can’t deny it even if you still wanted to.

I’ve been trying to figure out if the reality that white people live in feels like that to them. I’ve been trying to be open to that possibility.

We now live in a world with viral videos that show what happens to us. We see how white people talk about us when we’re bot there. We see how they make decisions about us. We see why they call the manager or the police at the drop of a hat.

So maybe a lot of Black people are just unlucky. How does it become something we see as pervasive and systemic? Well that’s when you bring in the data. Both observed data and studies that show again and again that Black people experience less success.

The realities of discrimination are brought to our doorstep in many and various ways that become undeniable. Black parents struggle with how to prepare their children for the rude awakening. It’s not what we want for our kids. But having it land on them unprepared can be deadly.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

The first thing I would say is that Black don’t *want* to believe we are surrounded by discrimination. We would much prefer it to not be true. And there are a great many Black people who try to move through the world as if it’s not true.
