Yeah, no. Don't boost the hashtag "Pandemic Of The Unvaccinated"

High risk people are still high risk post-vaccine.
Many high risk folks can't safely be vaccinated.
Vaccinated healthy people are being hospitalized with breakthrough infections.

It's still a pandemic, period.

There's a whole community on TikTok (you can find them here on Twitter, too) which scorns people as "fatphobic" for encouraging fitness and weight loss. They falsely say obesity isn't unhealthy. Should that be allowed? Are social media companies that allow it "killing people"?

There doesn’t have to be a conflict between profit motive and abundance. We can still encourage people to get rich by inventing new things. But at the other end of the spectrum, we can work to take established technologies and make them abundant and close to free for all.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

Right on cue. This is the propaganda. They really want us to believe this is the only way. It’s just not true.

But more so, it’s also just not a binary. I specifically use language like “a certain type of capitalism”. I can also imagine a type that accepts abundance.

So capitalism is literally making it *more* difficult for us to move towards a world with an abundance of clean eco-friendly power. Because it lacks a profit motive. And that’s basically the whole thing. We can’t have nice things because capitalism.

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

But it gets worse when you keep peeling back the layers and getting more nuanced. They’re making lots of money right now. What’s really going on is they’re gonna stop building more clean solar power plants because they’re worried it gets less profitable the more they build.

Beyond everything else wrong with this idea: Trump already got the vaccine. If him taking the vaccine isn't sufficient endorsement for his followers, an ad won't change that. They'll just believe it's a "deep fake" or that the color of his tie is a secret signal not to listen.

In reply to:

@iowahawkblog ("David Burge") replied to a tweet by iowahawkblog:

It would not kill Biden to invite Trump to jointly appear in a 5 minute pretaped, mutually approved film asking people to get a vaccine that they both want to take credit for. Doesn't have to be at the White House, it could be at a DQ or wherever.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

I explain all of that only to come back to my point. Only a capitalist system like this turns abundance into a problem. The problem isn’t “too much electricity”. The problem is they can’t charge enough for it, so they’re gonna let it go to waste instead.

Creating power with solar is getting better and cheaper. But storing it, transporting it, etc. Those technologies are still lagging behind. So the outcome is that solar plants can’t sell all of their readily available power right away. It costs them to hold it.

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

It’s weird, but the economics of the solar problem actually make sense. The problem is that electricity gets produced during the day when it’s sunny. And if it can’t be consumed right away, then it has to be stored so it can used when it’s not sunny.

In reply to:

@LOTHComic ("Daniel Kelly 🐇") replied to a tweet by panafrikam:

@panafrikam @polotek It doesn't even make sense! Cheap electricity means you can charge less than fossil fuels to win customers and your lower prices are still more profitable!

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

It keep wondering what it would look like to have a society that actively sought to achieve abundance for it’s citizens. We have enough to feed the entire world. The reason people are starving is the artificial scarcity that capitalism requires. Same for things like housing.
