For people who has been successful in tech and want to try to encourage newer people. Please make sure you're striking the right balance between encouragement and giving people unrealistic expectations. And try to do some self-reflection on how you *actually* got where you are.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

All I'm saying is this. If you're breaking into tech, it's cool to find encouragement when you need it. But make sure you're not absorbing info that's misleading or untrue. Learn about the industry you're in and how it works. Get informed and make realistic career moves.

You can do amazing work and be at a company that does not value it. You may never get more money.

You can do mediocre work and be at a company with deep pockets and low turnover. There are people who aren't that good making $300K-$400K because the market supports that.

Also, this specific advice "do great work and the money will follow". That shit has to go. It's just not true. This is your personal good fortune and lack of self-awareness about your advantages giving you survivorship bias and making you tell lies.

@ParissAthena Nothing wrong with being in it for the money, but much of tech is a creative endeavor and you need to find passion and inspiration otherwise you’ll be miserable and your work will suffer… and make less money. Do great work and the money will follow.

Both of those conversations can happen at the same time. If you're making $20K, you may be ready to take that $100K and be happy. But then you hear you should be making $120K and you're confused or angry. But it's all relative. The company, the area, the role, all that matters.

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

Here's what I mean by that. A lot of people learning tech and trying to break in can change their lives with $100K. That is not a lot of money in certain places. In some cases, at some companies, I tell people not to accept an offer of less than $120K straight out of college.

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

Finally, about making more money. First I think we all need to start speaking more openly about how much money we are talking about. Different people have a different relationship with how much money is a lot to them.

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

You do have to have enough engagement with tech work to think hard about it. This isn't a repetitive job. The reason we get paid a lot of money is that we are asked to solve problems that sometimes require deep thought, and yes creativity. You can't do this job on autopilot.

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by polotek:

Second, I'm one of those people who will tell you to stop using the word passion and stop listening to people who use it. You don't have to have a "passion" for this work. If find the work interesting and you have a strong work ethic you can produce great work and be successful.

First off, our industry is very wide. Most of our conversation revolves around the big players (FAANG) or most prominent startups. But there are a lot of different kinds of tech companies and tech jobs. Some of them will require "passion" and some don't.
