Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 495
When I began my tweets 494d ago, it was before we had reliable local, US, or world data. So I focused on data from @UCSFHospitals. Today, we’re awash in data, yet I find my hospital's data still provides a unique lens into our situation. (1/20)

As @DrLeanaWen convincingly argued @washingtonpost, it's time to add back restrictions, esp. indoor masking. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/07/20/pandemic-has-changed-course-again-biden-administration-urgently-needs-do-same/
As for me, it’s back to double-masks indoors & N95s on planes. And sadly, that’s it for indoor dining for a while. None of this pleases me.(19/20)

My interpretation: the risk of getting Covid is related to your vax status, whether you're taking steps to lower risk (masking, etc), & whether you’re exposed to the virus. Even in highly vaccinated SF, the odds of being exposed have gone up ~ 20-fold since June 1. (12/20)

Along with renewed restrictions, it’s clear that gentle persuasion did not achieve the vax rate we need to defeat Covid. Yes, the politics are hard, but dying is worse, as is re-tanking the economy. It’s time for vaccine mandates – nothing else gets us where we need to go.(20/20)

I think there’s a range of things that make devs feel clever and awesome. It doesn’t always look like “harder” or “more complex”. So there’s room for more things to fit my hypothesis, even if devs are talking about them as “simple” or “easy”.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
Maybe. I would state a different hypothesis. Whatever system makes developers feel clever and awesome will make them want to talk about how clever and awesome they are. Systems that are so easy that it doesn’t feel awesome to learn them don’t tend to do as well.

There is an upside to this though. We know that the best user experience also doesn't actually correlate with the greatest business success. Shitty products win all the time. There are a lot of things that come together to create business success. UX is only one.

A big part of the software tech market is other people trying to find ways to monetize whatever it is that developers have decided to do anyway. And that market pressure will always result in people saying that whatever we're doing right now produces the best software.
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
What I will say is a lot of software that needs to be written. And developers will only keep writing software if they feel it is some combination of easy, cool, clever, or faster. We crave newness in our experience, and we will create it whether the market wants it or not.
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
Just to be clear on what the conversation is. This is a very common sentiment among developers. As a person who has been doing this for 2 decades, I find very little correlation between what developers find good *for them* and good products for users.

@holman Developer-centric technology benefits users, indirectly.
A tech stack that gives flexibility, testing, ease of maintenance, etc. - this doesn’t seem to be for the user’s best interest. It makes devs happy, not users.
Until users want features added and changed quickly.
