Then, when that thing we said was gonna take 3 weeks actually takes 6 months, people should be gracious and look the other way. Don't mention it and pretend it's not a big deal. Because who could've anticipated right? But I still deserve a raise and a promotion btw.

There are many things that are more correlated with what's important about your job. Here's the other thing y'all don't wanna hear. Being evaluated for those things produces equal amounts of anxiety in many candidates. Because the truth is none of us want to be evaluated at all.

Taking a problem you just learned about and producing working code to solve it within 45 minutes. That's actually fucking amazing. It's just not an important skill for being successful at modern dev jobs. And it's only loosely correlated with what's important. So we threw it out.
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
I don't do whiteboard coding interviews in my programs. But it's not because many people hate them these days. It's a learnable skill. People just aren't learning it these days. The reason I don't use it is because it doesn't evaluate anything I care about.

More importantly though. I still got positive feedback regardless of which of these techniques were in practice. Because the problem is not the exercise. The problem is creating environment that helps mitigate people's anxieties so they can put their best foot forward.
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
I have tried many different interview techniques. From take home exercises to project breakdowns to pairing exercises to whiteboard system design. Any of it can give strong signal about a candidate if you know what it is you're actually evaluating for.

The difference is that MSFT apparently actually cares about improving the dev experience in a direction that people actually want and are actually supporting the ecosystem now?
