I spoke with maintainer after maintainer this year and the story was almost always the same: drive-bys are rarely worth the trouble unless you’re just trying to get them to advertise your project, and new maintainers aren’t worth it unless you know they can stick with it.

A bit of governance documentation isn’t going to save you the hours and hours of distracting effort it takes to onboard someone onto a significant project. That’s work, and you have to do it to get anyone else onboard.

And you have to balance that time with actually maintaining

This isn’t the issue.

New maintainers aren’t usually onboarded because they take an immense amount of effort to train and onboard, and 90% of the time, they usually flake.

I spoke to a bunch of maintainers this year and the main reason to even bother w/ new ppl was “marketing”

Many maintainers *choose* to struggle alone rather than have to entertain ideas that don’t fit their vision. I often refer to open source as creating personal fiefdoms and then being mad that nobody wants to volunteer to be your serf.

The thing nobody mentions about trying to become an open source contributor. It’s not only about “trust”. Many maintainers also want to know if you have the same brain as them. Because they have a vision for the project and won’t let anyone ruin that vision.
