I like how I've gone from whining for several days about all the sharp corners I've been running into, to basically making sweeping declarations about what I think the future of the internet should be, and I think @matrixdotorg is gonna be a huge part of it <3

my hope and suspicion is that in the next year or two, Matrix (and its more popular clients, like Element), will be where Discord was a few years ago, which is honestly MORE THAN ENOUGH to justify a mass-migration of communities over to Modern IRC, which is how it should've been.

my main complaint is that Matrix clients are just... not quite there yet. There's still sharp edges. I don't think it's quite ready to be a full-on replacement for Discord from a usability pov, but if you can talk a community into moving over, I think the benefits will outweigh.

it's high time we move away from silos, particularly for community work. I don't care what companies themselves decide to do with their own chats, but communities that want to stick around for a long time can no longer be held hostage by the whims of our existing (or any) silos.
