Communities can be more or less cohesive. I don't know very many of my immediate neighbors. But we are definitely still in community with each other. There are things that necessarily tie us together in ways where we have shared experiences.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

It's hard to pin down what "community" is and what "culture" is. It's more helpful to not have rigid definitions, because it allows us to talk about what we see without trying too hard to label it. It's useful to say there is a white community. But it's disjoint and not cohesive.

I'm not giving @zspencer a hard time. I think they are right in some sense. And many others have made a similar observation about the lack of cohesiveness in white community. It's not wrong. But I think requires more unpacking.

@polotek We don't really have shared experience or community as white people; I don't think any of us know how to start addressing that. It seems like this rage is rooted in a sense of entitlement; they were promised social status by white supremacy and they're mad they don't have it.

@ZeePDX ("Zee 🛸") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

@polotek One thing to understand is that white is a category that was built, and while there are some cultural touchstones, it does not function as a community.

White people are actually a bunch of separate communities and they don't necessarily connect. At all.

I would argue that in many cases, the new capabilities have come at the expense of making the old stuff way harder. And the efficiencies we were supposed to get were never there or they are outweighed by the things we inadvertently made less efficient.

Most of the time, when people are selling complexity, they're promising one of two things.

New capabilities. As in you can't do things that you couldn't before.

Efficiency. As in the thing you've been doing will get significantly cheaper and easier.

I'm taking about web technologies in particular. That's where I work and what I know. There are lots of other tech spaces as well where what I'm saying may not apply. So keep this context in mind.

The demand for software engineers is exploding. But we've spent the last 10 years or so making software systems way more complicated and less accessible. I mean it wasn't easy before. But what I'm seeing today is ridiculous.

Most people are like "someone actually wanted to do this, so it was necessary to add support to the language". And that's not the way I think about it. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. We are terrible at considering the cost of complexity.

Peele often misinterpret my arguments when I talk about unnecessary complexity in software. There are an infinite number of potential problems in software. We create a complex system when we try to make it solve all of them.

with quote tweet:

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @cramforce:

@cramforce @kellan No it isn't. I understand that language nerds want it to be a good explanation. But this is one of those things where people create complexity because they enjoy it, and then try to convince everyone else that it's good for them.
