the sheer ease of RTs/QTs allows harassment to spread like wildfire, well beyond the confines of a tweet's initial audience

that instant gratification mechanism doesn't exist on other sites, not even tumblr reblogs have the same force

You know what I'm hearing a lot of in this conversation?

People substituting "poor" when I said "struggling". Are we treating those as the same thing?

"The book doesn't give me all the answers to my specific situation so it's useless". Are we asking for one magic cure-all book?

I also agree that "if you're not rich it's your own fault" has done a lot of damage to discourse about money. Not only because of shitty "bootstraps" rhetoric. But because it's framed like it's a failing. Not knowing the info you need and not having guidance is not a failure.

I absolutely agree. I will also say that if you're waiting on perfect communication in order to receive important information, you're doing yourself a huge disservice. Is "poor communication" becoming an excuse for "I don't wanna talk about this?"

with quote tweet:

@SuperCaballeroJ ("Hispanic at the Disco🇵🇷🏳️‍🌈") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

@polotek It's poor communication. It hits all the same "If you aren't rich, it's your own fault" beats that we get bombarded with every day. Like, why is he sure that his friend didn't do what the book said/the instructions in the book were what's responsible for making him wealthy?

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

This is the thing though isn't it? A lot of people who are financially successful would tell you the opposite. That what's in the book *IS* important. Are they lying? Why would they do so? And why are we so sure we know what good advice sounds like?

with quote tweet:

@wwahammy ("Eric Schultz, The F-Bomb Guy") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

@polotek I think the issue, as I see it, is that what's in the book isn't particularly important as to why someone is or isn't successful financially.

Instead everybody is like "fuck that guy for even mentioning that he knows a person who is struggling". And that's the part I'm confused about. I know a lot of people who are struggling too. Should we not talk about it? Are we supposed to pretend it's not happening?

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

He talked about how his friend is struggling. And he *implies* that the friend didn't follow the advice in the book. He didn't actually say that and we don't know. Also, I think it's possible the "friend" could be entirely fictional. The thing is nobody is asking these questions.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

Several people, including my wife, have implied that this guy is only talking about himself and how he's rich. That's only part of the message I read. It also says "I read this book and took the actions it suggested. I believe that was part of how I achieved this."

The question I'm asking is this. Should we be having a public conversation that helps people learn ways to improve their financial situation? My assumption is that the conversation *requires* talking more explicitly about what it means to be "struggling".

Twitter Feed

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

Okay so @operaqueenie read the tweet. She said the message is not clear. She also said it's not clear from my tweet what kind of conversation I'm talking about. I'm surprised by that, but it's helpful to be reminded that we can be more explicit.
