What is happening in the airline industry is happening in healthcare, too, only, unfortunately (for reasons that go back hundreds of years and are complex), physicians don't have unions.

Imagine if you, as a pilot, were told you had to fly a plane in unsafe conditions.

I logged into my doctor’s website. They asked me to confirm my COVID vaccinations. That’s probably a good thing, because they’ve mistakenly recorded that I got an extra two J&J shots, two Pfizer shots, and an extra Moderna.

Get vaccinated. Get boosted. But don’t get 8 shots.

4. This is the most disconcerting. A lot of what I got today sounded like some version of these:

"All people with money are people who had extreme privileges".

"People with money can't possibly have any useful information for me in my situation."

3. People who are struggling or poor are extremely wary of talking openly to people who have money. That's certainly understandable as well. But I just thought the conversation would happen anyway. Even if it started with only the most willing participants on both sides.

2. I think that the discourse about money and trying to do better *does* happen. It's not very widespread in my circles.

But we also see a lot of people opt out. And not only opt out, but get angry at the people who do want to talk about it. I think that's a choice.

When I said "a conversation" I was talking about a discourse. Not letting someone lecture at you. A discourse is something you can show up to in any way you feel ready for. You give and take only what you're ready for.

But here are some things I learned. In no particular order.

1. Some people really don't want to be a part of a public conversation. It probably comes with a lot of missteps that will make them feel shamed and lectured to.

They're probably right, so I understand.

@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:

A friend also pointed out that I'm asking why we can't have the conversation rather than just having it. That's right. I actually do have the conversation all the time. The people that want to have it show up. Today I wanted to get perspective from those that don't show up.

I think I've lost perspective on this. I'm so used to examining everything. I think that tearing down long held assumptions is also a marker of a certain kind of privilege. I may be losing the ability to meet people where they are. ☹️
