@polotek I think in conversations like these it's also interesting to think about how "future value" is also measured in terms of "how much $ I'll make for being an early adopter if I can sucker others into it". They really like obfuscating that, imo.

There is literally no bigger fish than the existential danger of climate change. But again, all you have to do is imagine some future state that makes it okay.

@polotek Yes. I think there's a mitigation for environmental damage with the move to PoS (admittedly not all chains are moving to it).
The question then becomes, was the environmental damage caused while figuring out a mitigation worth the potential future value? I have not quantified.
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
This is where Jaisen lost respect with me. Instead of being accountable, he ultimately fell back on the "bigger fish to fry" argument. If there is harm happening elsewhere, it's okay to not address the harm happening directly in front of us.

@jmathai ("Jaisen Mathai") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
@polotek I'm not sure. I have to resolve this with all of the other things I engage in that bring harm.
The reason my gut says it is worth it is because there's *a lot* of harm and I think there are bigger fish to fry than the harm that's brought by crypto.
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
After I pushed him, Jaisen did a respectable job describing something that sort of sounds like real future value. This was helpful for me in terms of understanding how other people might be thinking about it.

For me the fundamental issue is this. We can only know the magnitude of harm in hindsight. So people can deflect from a direct question about tradeoffs. All they have to do is imagine some hypothetical future thing that is so good it was worth it.
with quote tweet:
@polotek ("Marco Rogers") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
@jmathai If you do nothing today, the harms will happen. You will only be able to reflect on the true magnitude and severity of the harms later. In hindsight after it's already done. Then it will be too late to say "that wasn't worth it". That's the dilemma.

The most important idea is this. People know crypto is causing harm. But they are weighing that against potential future value once the "kinks" are worked out.
with quote tweet:
@jmathai ("Jaisen Mathai") replied to a tweet by @polotek:
@polotek Not really. It needs to be compared with potential future value. Future value can be adjusted to account for the risk that nothing will pan out. Tough to talk about w.r.t. current harm but it's important to zoom out.
