All in all, I'd rather have a loud, angry argument with you over the thing that happened than get a performative apology for the sake of "peace".

Deal with your shit promptly, and engage with others' pain genuinely. Peace that's built on a lie is just war deferred.

Twitter Feed

@Maryxus ("Maryxus Maddly") replied to a tweet by @Maryxus:

It's also a matter of trust. A real apology can leave your relationship stronger than it started, because you've established a basis of compassion and trust. But finding out later that it was a lie means you can't even trust their attempts to reestablish trustr genuine

@Maryxus ("Maryxus Maddly") replied to a tweet by @Maryxus:

Think about it: what does a performative apology imply? First, it shows that you recognize that the other person is hurting, but since you aren't genuinely trying to understand why/how/how not to hurt them in the future, you only care that their pain makes you uncomfortable

@Maryxus ("Maryxus Maddly") wrote:

Personally, I find performative apologies to be worse than simply saying nothing.

Even if they work in the short term (which they don't always), the betrayal of finding out later that it was insincere is likely worse than whatever you were performatively apologizing for
