it *is* good to point out that "the trademark no longer exists" is not on the table. I didn't personally want that, but like, at least it is a clear explanation of the thinking process that went into the document.

@steveklabnik replied to a tweet by @steveklabnik:

so like again, is this the last time for comments? this post spends a lot of time talking about process, in the past and now, but not in the future. how will that feedback be incorporated? will be there another draft? another set of feedback requested?

@steveklabnik replied to a tweet by @steveklabnik:

so, roughly, blog post is:

1. here's the process explained again
2. correcting the "the foundation did this" narrative (legitimately a good thing, 100%)
3. we want very tight control of rust
4. people are being bad at giving feedback
5. retro/summary after comments close

@steveklabnik replied to a tweet by @steveklabnik:

there's also not a real acknowledgement of the harm to rust that's happened, other than to talk about how they think some people's criticisms are "harassment and abuse." which are of course bad.

but there's other harms too.

@steveklabnik replied to a tweet by @steveklabnik:

the only thing we get as guidance for the thinking of this group is

"substantially giving up our right to define what Rust is and is not in the future. Not all open source projects have retained that right.

they *want* to go further with restrictions than other projects.

i am personally unimpressed but this is better than nothing.

main problem here is that it does not actually directly address the fears that have caused people to delete their accounts, content, and have made them fearful to write more rust in the future

the problem with 'We will not ship a trademark policy that Project representatives and the Foundation aren't happy with and proud of after reviewing community feedback' is that the proposed policy is apparently one the project representatives and foundation are happy with

@steveklabnik replied to a tweet by @steveklabnik:

the rust project loves to say "we are sorry we will run a retrospective" and then not run the retrospective, or do it so long after the fact that you can't really learn much anyways.
