Biscuit's symbol table is interned strings: refer to a string by an index in the table. This makes shorter tokens, and much faster execution (easier to compare 2 numbers than 2 strings). But why would I get random behaviour there? Am I iterating over hashmap entries somewhere?

What could make a random behaviour if all uses of a RNG are deterministic? Hashmaps! The default hashing algorithm uses a RNG. So where am I using those? 🧐
Considering authorization still works, and it affects printing, I'm looking in the direction of symbol tables

How do we get determinism with algorithms using randomness? By passing as argument random data, or the random generator itself.
This is how samples generation works in biscuit: by passing around a RNG with a static seed.
And so the entire lib should be deterministic 🤔

Imagine implementing a system that generates random looking data. How do you detect when it's wrong?
In general, specs publish example data, with expected output for some input. If you get the exact same results, then it's good and will be compatible with other implementations!

You would think that for crypto systems, we actually want randomness, and you'd be right! lots of algorithms rely on secret data that should be unpredictable and generate data that looks random.
But when developing them, we want determinism: one input always gives the same output

I got an interesting bug in biscuit's rust implementation last week. Printing a rule coming from a snapshot got two possible different results, changing randomly.
Non determinism! 😨
How is that possible ? And why is non dterminism so important?
