(this practice is why shows often seem to have such jerky plots the last few years, with characters oddly characterized episode to episode - obsessed with something, then suddenly forgetting it, treated as tragedy one episode then comedy later. it's not the writers' fault.)

A few writers were expected to break an entire season - 10 episodes - in just 4 weeks.
