When I came to the U.S., everyone around me encouraged me to pick an “American name” to make it easier for people to say and remember my name. One day, I heard an old lady call her pretty blond granddaughter “Michelle" so I adopted the same name on a whim.

I spent my entire adult life in the U.S. by my "nickname" Michelle because I hated dealing with the burden of correcting people each time they got my name wrong.
