Turns out, Verified accounts are still Verified, and on the Verified tab, and you can confirm they're Verified with a search. The checks aren't gone, Clyde just made them invisible.

It looks to me like he never did figure out a mass unverification and so they are updating the UI (something they are not great at) to simply not display it.
Which might explain why he wanted to axe so much API access before this.
