favorites so far:
Aruna dan Lidahnya is a story about a food critic who travels to various regions and uncovers a political conspiracy. the food looks amazing and the scenes of the Indonesian countryside are beautiful.
Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash (cw: violence, sa) works as a kind of criticism of the hyper-violent revenge films I saw on tv when I grew up in Indonesia in the 90s; it's really weird but somehow the way it criticizes toxic masculinity within that context holds together well.
Lost in Thailand (Mandarin): this one is just fun and lighthearted about a businessman trying to beat his rival to finding the man who can fund his work. it's rather silly but the settings really took me back.
tried watching 36th Chamber of Shaolin which is supposed to be a kung-fu masterpiece but Amazon only has an English dub which is absolutely cringe; I couldn't last five minutes.

been sick the last week so i've been watching a bunch of films in Mandarin and Indonesian and i honestly think for language learning purposes it'd be cool if the subtitles could have a "literal" version of the translation that left the idioms intact
