The browser vendors implement their most restrictive app stores and development tools, which forbids VMs and most competing services and any software that doesn't utilize the vendor's own web APIs. There appear to be exceptions but closer inspection reveals tightly controlled relationships that benefit the browser vendors. The entire industry is under the thumbs of two giant corporations. No more "side loading" and now only Safari and MS Chrome survive. All programs are shipped via the browser. Many are entire VMs running under WebAssembly, recreating (as much as practical) the platforms that were replaced by the browsers. Browser vendors continue the drive to control developer tooling with almost everything running on vendor controller servers.
