Just read a post asking Eugen to resign from developing Mastodon and I really have to ask: what are you folks smoking?

It’s his project. It’s open source. Fork it if you want to. But what kind of mind-blowing sense of entitlement drives you to think you can tell someone they should stop working on something they’ve built?

*smh*

good morning.

it's a great day to listen.

the experiences the world has to share with each of us are greater than we can ever hope to experience individually in one lifetime, so the experiences others offer are truly gifts.

That last one doesn't fit well with something optimized for the other two. I mean, you see people try to squeeze it in all the time regardless. But I think a social network optimized for the first two will never serve the interests of the last one very well.

And a network optimized for number 3 won't ever satisfy the needs of the first two modes.

This has probably been observed elsewhere by somebody more thoughtful, but it seems one of the (many) issues with "social media" is the mixing of incompatible modes. There seems to be at least three:

1. Passive receiving of the broadcasts of others (parasocial).
2. Striving to find and build an audience for your broadcasts.
3. Wanting to connect and interact with people one on one.

The first two work well with frictionless, VC backed junk optimized for growth at all costs.

I have been a bad open source maintainer. It's not one of my usual hats, but now that I have it I will endeavor to be better at wearing it.

#brutaldon now has a new code repo at https://gitlab.com/brutaldon/brutaldon from which I plan on handling any new code contributions.

I'll get some docs together tomorrow around a code of conduct for the project and contributor guidelines and such.

If you are a brutaldon user and/or a python programmer who would like to see some changes in brutaldon, swing on by!

Not that it matters, but I've always thought the local timeline is a useful concept. It probably makes more sense for a small, purpose built community instance of some kind with a common theme or purpose. I'd imagine it's useless for mastodon.social or the like.

I never understood the purpose of exposing people to the federation hose, and it seems like that has too many downsides.

To those upset about some design decisions in the iOS app: Nobody’s forcing you to use the iOS app. I’m fully aware that it takes a different turn from all other existing apps in some aspects, and that’s the point. If it makes the fediverse larger by retaining more new users, then I’ve succeeded and everyone benefits. If not, nobody except me loses.
