• a Polistes annularis forager, stands on a rose leaf, carefully investigating a spot that might have had some dried honey on it (I don't always remember where I put it). unusually, all four of her wings are spread, showing their size in a way that's often hard to tell from seeing them folded. her carapace is black patterned with rust-red spots and stripes, offset by the bright yellow ring around the margin of her first abdominal segment (remote)
• the same wasp a few minutes later, this time seen preparing for takeoff from the underside of a rose leaf. she's standing proud of the surface, all six legs extended to raise her wings clear, and those wings are beating fast enough to be blurred in the 1/250s exposure. her slender abdomen is visible through the blur (remote)
