okay, so Ubuntu hates the bootloader in that machine... so now onward to Plan B: reinstalling MacOS/Darwin from scratch and figuring out the differences from an Ubuntu install (shouldn't be too bad, probably have to arm-wrestle the config over where to find ssl libraries but so it goes)
