4yo: Dad, how old are you?

Me: [REDACTED] years old.

4yo: WOW! That's a *lot* of old.

Me: Yeah... uh... thanks!

Flying between Seattle and New York twice a year, I really honed the entire experience to be as efficient and predictable as possible. What seats to get, what to take with me, when to sleep and when to eat, how to get to and from airports. Took me a few years, but I'm pretty happy with the result.

Kiddo: [looking out the window] Wow! It looks like a snow globe out there!

Me: Yeah, that's why we call it snow.

I don't care what an ML model, trained on who knows what, thinks about things, and if I'm looking for inspiration or to generate ideas (something I hear many people talk about when referring to these things), we've had tools forever for that that don't require all the compute resources of ML.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I normally think of myself as a very curious person (although maybe I'm wrong about that). But I have not been tempted at all to try to access these generative ML algorithms to spend time poking at them.

I have interests in specific uses of ML (e.g. diagnosing cancer tumors, replacing heuristics in optimizing algorithms), but all these "general" language or image generators leave me cold. There's nothing I want from them.

It reminds me of learning a spoken language and getting frustrated that literal translation is not always really available. With more fluency you translate meaning at a different level of abstraction

My coding project this weekend touched on some of the earliest code I'd ever written, and looking it over: it's astonishing how much a certain class of problems just go away when you learn not to work against the intentions of the language. I had a lot of problems in that early project with lists (shallow vs deep copying etc) that sure I understand better, but also I would just subconsciously structure things to not run against those issues now
