Seriously, all this became such a farce… But their voters are happy because it's "owning the libs", or whatever…

What would this achieve?
Well, the key problem with building performance culture is creating solidarity between the haves and the have-nots, and a mode like this that triggers for ALL users is critical in breaking through the privilege bubble.
This was overcome for SSL/TLS because every user experiences the crypto properties of connections the same way. For performance, we must build the connections more explicitly.

I firmly believe that if your site generates > 500ms main thread tasks for a sizeable fraction of users (say, 10%?), then browsers should put a "slow" icon in the URL bar and send a bloom filter down that opts your site into "single thread mode" for all users.
In this mode the browser would:
- disable off-thread compile and GC
- block scrolling on main-thread tasks
- animate on the main thread
- block on image decode
That we don't do this today is a failure of imagination.

got some really great replies to this, and it's so fun to see different approaches to a pretty simple and common but not quite trivial problem. for those curious, i think i am going to go with:
def join_bylines(l):
return ', '.join(l[:-1]) + ', and ' + l[-1] if len(l) > 2 else ' and '.join(l)but some nice alternatives with generators, match statements, and even one with python's behavior of returning the first truth-y value in an and operation. neat!

Looks like my submission for @HIP22 got accepted. I'll be giving a three-hour workshop on how to program video games for Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, etc. in Go. Should be fun: https://pretalx.c3voc.de/hip-berlin-2022/talk/RTYQRS/
See you in Berlin!

teeny python challenge: given a list of 1-4ish strings, what's a tidy way of joining them like:
- a
- a and b
- a, b, and c
- a, b, c, and dobviously it's hardcodable but it feels like there's probably a nifty little way i'm not thinking of

When you order "original Sony" rechargeable batteries specified at 3000mAh & 30A, and the ones you receive are labeled Samsung 2500mAh & 25A, but upon testing it turns out they are more like 1500mAh & 15A... and probably fake.
