As such, there are a lot of elements to Otranto that you wouldn't expect from The First Gothic novel, like supernatural things happening in broad daylight in front of everyone. In the first scene, the heir to Otranto is obliterated on his wedding day by a giant helmet that falls out of the sky.

A couple years ago I read Castle of Otranto, which is cited as the first gothic novel.

Despite the connotations that "gothic" has now, in its original conception it was a fascination with the medieval and its pre-Enlightenment strangeness rather than the macabre in particular.
