I find myself being repulsed by artificially sensationalist headlines more and more. "Hubble Discovered Shocking Truth About the Andromeda Galaxy." I'm actually interested in what it is that it's discovered, but I really, really don't want to reward whomever decided to put the word "shocking" in to bate me. The repulsion to fakeness is strong enough for me to just not watch it.

I just got this book called Gothic Architecture and Sexuality in the Circle of Horace Walpole and it turns out that the original surrealists themselves agree:

The intro to my copy has a quote from one of Horace Walpole's letters where he says that the giant pieces of armor that appear in the story were actually inspired by things he saw in a dream.

Calling it "surreal" is a bit of an anachronism but not totally off-base, since he is working with dream imagery

A couple years ago I read Castle of Otranto, which is cited as the first gothic novel.

Despite the connotations that "gothic" has now, in its original conception it was a fascination with the medieval and its pre-Enlightenment strangeness rather than the macabre in particular.
