Technological Futures: A Letter to the #Smolnet

gemini://perma.computer/letter

Computing can be more than the ever-growing techno-capitalist juggernaut. It can be about things other than speed, or scale. It can be about human creation, and human interaction. It can be about people finding new and creative uses for old hardware and software. It can be about computing as an art, not as a production line. It can be about sustainability. It can be about cleverness. It can be about small things.

There's a lot I like about both Mastodon and bluesky. One thing I really like about the other place is the use of domains as usernames, so I blogged about why https://parkerhiggins.net/2023/05/bluesky-atproto-url-usernames/

Their cautionary note is from *2020* and still people are using an internal design doc to draw unfounded conclusions.

Also: I don’t trust people who say they’ve “never run into an issue” with untyped languages. Oh you’ve written flawless code for 10 years? Can you also turn water into wine? Tell me more. 🙄

For those wondering, ′′how did i do it?":
I boiled 10L of water, added 2 tablespoons of vinegar, 1 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate, two cups of coke, and half cup of lemon juice, then stirred well. Waited 3 minutes, put the pan in the solution for 45 minutes, then added a quarter cup of chlorine bleach to the mixture. Then I brushed it with a firm toothbrush and put it back into the liquid for another 25 minutes. I took it out, rinsed it, and it looked exactly the same, so I threw it away, and went and bought a new one.

Some things I'd like to expand:

6. Documenting our experience at Cosocial making a coop, so others can replicate it.

7. Helping the AP/AS2 extension-writing process.

8. Getting the SWICG back to regular meetings.

9. Bringing https://identi.ca/ into the social web by implementing ActivityPub in pump.io.

10. Setting up a Mastodon server for my team at Open Earth Foundation.

11. Documenting the HCI research I did on making Mastodon a good way to connect with friends.

I started replaying it just a few hours after finishing my replays of 999 and VLR, and I can't imagine this holding anyone's attention if they hadn't just done the same. There's heavy continuity between VLR and ZTD and lots of allusions to things that someone hearing this for the first time could never keep track of
