"In his book, Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy 1945-1975, Max Hastings explains how meals were cooked by punching holes in a ration tin and using a C4 explosive to heat it. Hastings also writes about the pills that troops consumed daily, including a malaria tablet, salt pills that could be sucked on, as well as Lomotil tablets, taken four times per day to control diarrhea brought on by the Halazone troops used to purify their water."

Let's work together to make Mastodon a success. Here's some simple things you can do to help:
-Pretend that other social media platforms don't exist. If someone mentions Twitter or Facebook, change the subject by looking up to the sky and screeching loudly.
-Make new users feel welcome by messaging them and saying "I would do unspeakable things to benefit you".
-Get the word "Mastodon" tattooed onto your forehead. When asked about your terrible life decision, you can explain what Mastodon is.

For those with accounts on Mastodon instances (or instances running #Mastodon forks), this might be a good time to enable this in Preferences → Notifications:
☑️ Block direct messages from people you don't follow
Spammers seem to be (ab)using the DM functionality. Making it impossible to reach you if you do not follow a person makes that much less effective. And in general is just a good idea, IMVHO.
Tried to figure out how to do the same on #Calckey, but could not find the setting. Hjalp?

Fifteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that. 🫤

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.
Someday soon-ish I'd like to have identi.ca working with ActivityPub. When I get the time for it!
