This book feels a bit like a successor to Interface (Neal Stephenson & J. Frederick George, 1994) which I personally think is the most underrated Stephenson novel.

Orcas have sunk 3 boats in Europe and appear to be teaching others to do the same.
Scientists think a traumatized orca initiated the assault on boats after a "critical moment of agony" and that the behavior is spreading among the population through social learning.

If nothing else, Mastodon seems to be pretty convincing evidence that an edit button can work. I'm not seeing many cases of it being abused the way many worried it would be.
Bad actors are the problem, not the tools. Get rid of the bad faith people, and we can have nice things.

Yes frontend is teetering atop so much self imposed complexity in the name of 'good engineering' that it barely works anymore. Add to that layers of management enacting poor leadership decisions, irrational timelines and an industry leading itself around by the hype machine and honestly it's a wonder anything works at all anymore!

Is anyone else noticing that software just... doesn't work right anymore? Every single booking system I've tried to use in the last week has had a serious revenue-affecting bug (airline, cab reservation, temporary rental, doctor appointment). Two of them were time zone bugs, one was a form field validation bug on a required field, the last was "you can't get an assigned seat unless you call us"
