Grrrr!

The precious angels at #Apple don't want you running #AppleMusic on an Amazon #FireStick.

You have to link your Apple music account to Alexa in order for it to work.

But the FireStick is just #Android, right? Right!

So side loading the Apple Music APK works!

But… it is impossible to get past the EULA because my TV isn't a touchscreen.

JUST MAKE THINGS INTEROPERABLE YOU MOOMINS!

The choice of functional reactive models (vs, you know, software) is not even a major plot point in this drama.

To the extent the world cares about why it's so expensive to make websites/apps and feel backed into FB/Meta/Google answers for how to do it reasonably is related to, uh, "pure fuctions"?...is a footnote, and not the entertaining kind.

As a social liberal, the way I have come to understand my own relatively conservative values for software is as a gate between tides. Engineers -- like lawyers, bankers, consultants, and other highly paid professionals -- cannot change their operating environments quickly or unilaterally, but they can (on the basis of the discipline distinguishing itself through value creation) dampen malign actors.

Frontend's current struggle is to claw out of the shitcoin/ambulance-chaser morass.

I'm not sure what a good life in software is, but I'd start with:

  • Make things that are good for everyone
  • Build for the least among us
  • Maintain more than you displace
  • Your impact is never the sum of your personal efforts, so make others better

The most surprising thing I've learned about Fallout from Tim Cain's (producer/writer/programmer on the original Fallout) youtube videos is that the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system didn't come about from picking the word SPECIAL and making an acrostic out of it.

In its 1st draft, it didn't have "Luck." They added that for purely mechanical reasons and didn't change it to SPECIAL until they introduced the new system to the team as ACE LIPS and someone pointed out it could spell SPECIAL instead

Once again, if a person has been granted access to classified national security information and they give it to someone who is not authorized to have it, they are not, by definition in the law, a "whistleblower." The Web can be fast, even on under powered HW. Here's a short clip launching the Settings app of @capyloon on a Pinephone Pro.

In a nutshell:
- the runtime is Gecko 116 loading content from a local web server.
- the app is not minified, there is not even a build step! (https://github.com/capyloon/nutria/tree/main/apps/settings)
- The UI is built with https://shoelace.style web components and a custom lazy loader.

And I'm sure we can do even better.
