Hypothesis: The Fediverse consists almost entirely of adults.

I expect most youths are drawn to the large corporate social networks; but those of us who took the effort to come here have likely experienced the Internet before most of those existed.

Of course, the only way to test this is by collecting data using the most scientifically rigorous method available to me: a Mastodon poll, lol

(I expect this will only reach English-speaking Fedi, but do boost if you're able)

Imagine having the complete scripts (game code) of all Sierra On-Line games that use the SCI engine published between 1988 and 1996 fully decompiled, human-readable and annotated.

Yes. 100% of the scripts. 100% of the games. 100% made public.

Our SCI mastermind sluicebox did it again!

If you want to learn about the full story, ranging from a deep-dive into the code and tales about the history of Sierra's script language and previous reverse engineering efforts, check out

Results from this poll: With ~620 respondents,

66% are opposed or alarmed to "Threads" [Instagram] joining Mastodon/Fediverse.

85% are supportive or indifferent to Tumblr doing the same.

Here's why I made this poll:

It seems odd at first the Fediverse is all about connecting platforms but its users are so vehemently opposed to "Threads".

What this poll implies is Mastoverse users are *not* opposed to corporate presence in the Fediverse. This is a trust issue with Facebook *specifically*.

It's an endless parade of totally workable systems covered in knee-deep layers of React-scented manure, spread thick on the back of arguments about agility (for screens don't actually change that much) and "performance" (they aren't measured, and when they are, turn out to be much much slower).

Do we need clawback clauses in frontend engineer contracts for UX degredation?

Just really, existentially sad about the state of frontend today. So much unearned self-confidence, so little attention to the user. The chest-thumping privilege of born-on-third-basers making systems worse for those who weren't.

Facebook is not stopping the release of Threads in the EU (only) because of lack of GDPR compliance, because after all that’s not how it works, they’re doing so in an attempt to punish the EU for having the temerity to regulate them and are hoping to induce FOMO in a society that is openly worried about falling behind in innovation.

This will not work.

A really annoying dark pattern I see over and over:

- start using an app or service
- agree to receive notifications such as “your car is here” or “someone replied to you”
- time passes
- app or service starts abusing notifications to get me to engage via promotions or even plain advertising

Often my easiest recourse there is to turn off the app’s notification privileges.

Abusive, short-sighted, and dumb. You’re never getting that permission back.

Yeah, figured you'd get the joke. It's how I manage tension.

To contribute, I think there's things people can do to foster discussion.

1. Take toots at face value.
2. Don't insert logic/arguments into other's words.
3. Ask a question; don't insinuate intent.
3.a. If you didn't start the thread, ask questions, don't hijack.
4. Walk away; you won't convince someone they're "wrong".
4.a. If the thread is hating/punching down, block, mute, name-and-shame and report the bugger.
