The problem with modern frontend isn't that people pick React, it's that a huge chunk of industry have abandoned user-centric values in the name of efficiency, delivering neither good UX nor acceptable DX in the process.

Picking React in '23 is merely a symptom of a much deeper rot.

I know, from experience, that ~nobody dragging React behind them into the new gig is thinking in terms of cost; it's all "opportunity", but if you asked "cool, but what framework from this decade would you pick?", they don't have an answer.

React is legacy tech, held up by a dense web of cargo cults, self-congratulating to a lack of conclusive evidence. How it has remained so turgidly preeminent is a mystery only solved by an industry of product mangers failing to mange their products.

For anyone unaware, Google Chrome is currently rolling out an update that track your interests based on browsing history, then share them with 3rd party websites. The thing that always drives me insane about Tailwind is how far out of your way it makes you go to use some of the absolute best features of CSS.

A grid where every row/column is _not_ the same width? Sorry, you're gonna need to either make that a JIT class or edit a config file.

Container queries? Gonna need to install a plugin for that.

I don't know how many seconds I ostensibly save by staying in markup, but I'm pretty certain it's not as many as I lose to fiddly little crap like this.

PSA: until you've experienced burnout, you are likely to underestimate how long it takes to recover. It's not a couple of months, it's 6-18 months for partial recovery, and maybe 3 years for full recovery (all depending on how bad it gets). The company burning you out will almost never support your recovery, mostly they'll drop you when you stop being productive.

Nobody in business cares about your health but you, so be your own advocate, or suffer the consequences.
