I do count myself as an "information worker", at least a lot of the time. And I have long had a skeptical eye towards many services and products claiming to boost my productivity aimed at my particular endeavors. But it only occurred to me today to think more broadly. You know, in light of all the SALAMI products.

I think "information workers" that don't generally have good measures of their "productivity" are susceptible to making judgements on whether something improves their productivity* on vibes alone. If it's one or more of new, novel, cool looking, fun, or everybody is doing it will be enough to persuade them that something must be improving their productivity.

* Putting aside for the moment the unhealthy nature of a culture that prizes productivity above all else.

Daaaaamn. @djb just *eviscerated* the NIST selection process for the new generation of post-quantum crypto algorithms… I am the farthest thing from a cryptographer, but even I can see that this is a hot mess.

From my time in infosec, I have a deep respect for the dedicated technologists at NIST and the work they do. This is disappointing and, frankly, painful to see. I hope someone there steps up to address the issues he's brought to light here!
