Here’s my tip on influencing companies online:
You do not need to _default_ to outrage-clicks. Especially for smaller firms, don’t do it. That’s not how they work and they will resent it. Be honest and direct. Say ~publicly innocuously in earnest, then transition to privately.

PSA to datetime library authors!

"Local" time zone should never be assumed implicitly! If you must support something like naked "2023-10-27", create a naive date object and either require a time zone along with it when you need one, or if you have to assume, assume UTC. There's only one UTC, and there are 38 local ones. See the problem?

isagalaev ("Ivan Sagalaev :flag_wbw:") wrote:

But then a library comes along and just declares that "startOfMonth" will always be in a local time zone. Like, even if you give it a tz-aware date object, it would first forcefully *move* it to a local tz, and only then will start thinking of where in the calendar it is. And now we get a whole month worth of a difference depending on whether you live west or east of London. Who thought it could be a correct behavior? Like, ever?

You know, I perhaps should be less optimistic about declaring software problems as "solved"… For the last two days our team was fighting with a time zone problem. Time zones! We've had them around for ages, surely by now we should know how to deal with them? RIght?

No. As a researcher and educator, I believe in providing clear, accurate information.

The "evidence" that the election was stolen is made up bullshit. To call it anything else is a disservice.

If someone claims that 2+2=5, I'm not going to try to get them to compromise that it's 4.5.

It's with this personal perspective that I view the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Thousands of innocent children and civilians have lost their lives, homes have been reduced to rubble, and an entire community is struggling to find hope amid the chaos. While the scale and context may differ, the human suffering remains the same.

At Symbolic Software, we've decided to turn our pain into purpose. (2/4)

I'm annoyed by the rants about HTTP/2 being "bad" for having one (already mitigated) issue, as if we foolishly left a better protocol behind.
HTTP/1 had a long history of request smuggling attacks due to its deceptively tricky to parse syntax. H/1 got hit by slow loris DoS. H/1 pipelining is forever unreliable — browser vendors have given up on it after years of trying, and getting silent data corruption. The "simple" protocol has created complexity of domain sharding and cookieless domains.
