@verge But more impactfully, if app store purveyors actually thought that privacy were a human right, they would prevent native apps from circumventing browser choice through tracker-blocker-blocker approaches like "in app browsers".

Ever wonder why the web feels like it doesn't work right from insta/fb/whatsapp? It's because Apple and Google are *extremely* happy to hold the coat of Meta while they shake you down for data.

@verge Again, and I cannot stress enough, none of the real low-hanging fruit has been collected. We're still in the "doctor, it feels good when I stop punching myself in the face" phase on digital privacy, and yet the tech press is out here showering heavyweight facepunching champs with confetti for brief pauses.

What would a serious, if minimal, privacy effort look like? To start with, app stores would set policies about use of payments for apps that do not sign up to data-at-rest covenants.

@verge This power has not been used to clamp down on tracking, except in the most performative, low-impact ways. The idea that Apple and Google removing *explicit tracking IDs* from the OS is some sort of huge privacy win is *bewildering*. That the tech press lapped it up like it has actually been useful, when the big issues come from data at rest, has been serially depressing. Privacy advocates cheering for the worst "do something, do anything" improvements makes me mentally flip a tiny table.

@verge At a tactical level, the tracking gap (the practical amount of data an app can extract vs. its web counterpart for the same service) has always been maintained in favour of native. Recent, belated attempts to (timidly) hang a "beware of dog" sign about fingerprinting really give you a sense of how little oversight there has been. But why?

Because better tracking in apps gives the app stores more power, which is good for business.

@verge Never forget: whenever Apple and Google spout platitudes like "privacy is a human right", always ask "and so what policies have you put in place in your app stores to discourage abuse of data at rest?"

They've had unbelievable, unprecedented power over native developers for the last 15 years...has it been used to improve privacy? Or to facilitate scaled tracking in ways never possible on the web?

milliFORTH weighs in at just 422 bytes. This beats out Tunney's sectorLISP (436 bytes) by 14 bytes, making FORTH now the smallest language once again.

When I was a teen, I was into drawing and inking. Part of my process would involve tracing over a pencil rough where I had worked out a composition. If you're not using tracing paper, you need to use a light box to help you see the under drawing. At the time, they were expensive. So I built my own by getting a local glass shop to cut two panes of glass: one smooth and one frosted. I picked up an under counter fluorescent light, and then built a box to house it in from scraps.

@verge Google (and Apple) were right to be terrified of sideloading; their OSes are insecure and not even 10% of the software delivered as native apps today should be allowed the default superpowers that native platforms (unwisely) dole out like candy today.

But the right response isn't to undermine competition they way they have; it's to secure their damned OSes and move most apps back onto the web where they can do less damage and track users less.

@verge It's always best to conceive of huge firms as agglomerations of smaller companies that, in their default state, have no love for each other. Them's the breaks. Even so, this sort of antisocial behaviour is only facilitated by the rest of the org a.) not knowing (see also: MADA) and b.) assuming everyone else is doing the right thing because you try to.

The Play and Android teams were always antagonistic toward the web (which they saw as a threat) in my time there, but some of this stuff...wow.

More people should do this. Rather, more people should have amazing partners that remind them to do this for two years.
