@slightlyoff Hired a design firm to build a marketing site (static pages, no interactivity). Asked for a WordPress site so the content could be edited by non-techies. What they delivered instead was a React app badly shoehorned into WP. Most of the content was not editable. Navigation menus only worked with a mouse, no landmark elements, buttons instead of links, explicitly-numbered tabindex attributes, etc.😞

It cemented my reluctant perception that React devs don't know how the browser works.

@slightlyoff with average tenure (at least in the UK) of developers being barely over a year, many simply don’t stick around to see their poor decisions play out, and those replacing them get to blame their predecessors – and even then, too often the determination is ‘this is a poor implementation of React’ rather than ‘React should never have been decided upon’.

@ryantownsend @slightlyoff part of it for sure.

The other part is I think senior management and exec level aren't actually aware that technical choices are killing them. After all who would they ask to evaluate why a project is failing to deliver on expectations? The team that built it? Hah.

Orgs rarely have enough technical knowledge at the higher levels of management and rarely have teams of experts who could weigh in independently.

Up until this week @paulbiggar was on the board at a fairly substantial tech company that he co-founded. If you work in tech, you’ve probably heard of it; if you don’t, you probably haven’t. But then he wrote a blog post.

Quite the damning piece on Tesla and its recklessly (probably criminally) irresponsible application of the "move fast and break things" ethos.

tl;dr: the company has known for ages that its cars have the kind of chronic defects that would get a company like Chevy or Toyota sued into oblivion (way more than just autopilot stuff; basic mechanical stuff). And it's often gotten away with blaming its users for those issues.

@slightlyoff @adamhill 100% this. We've sadly got some new React sites and I can't understand where the performance penalty and complexity cost comes from. Even after seeing the poor perf, bug count skyrocket and velocity tank the teams are still doubling down on it. I don't get what they are getting out of it. I think they literally have never been shown another way, and nobody wants to take a risk on something they don't understand even if what they do know isn't succeeding for anyone.
