Ever since news first broke of the Zuckerberg incursion, I've been posting on alternative organizational modeling which could serve as a bulwark against not only Meta, but other attempts at capitalist recuperation of the fediverse. Consistently, these posts "underperform" compared to those that are directly about the Meta disaster. It's true that they tend to be longer and more complex.
If we want to activate the fedi into real action, even at this point we've got an uphill push, because the seeming fact is that what many people want from social media is to hang out and shoot the shit, not engage a new form of prefigurative activism. I say this regretfully and with a dash of disillusion, because I've been trying to contribute to a such a catalyst on here and not getting much reciprocal energy back beyond a smattering of boosts. But circumstances are growing more urgent and we have to keep trying, because regardless of the exact details of the scheme, it's clear the fedi is in imminent danger as a community-owned and operated online space

The Racket has been hard to get a hold of for a long time now. It was effectively lost until rediscovered in Howard Hughes' collection. It got a restoration that airs on TCM sometimes, but I don't think it's ever had a disc release. Until now, it was either catch a broadcast or pirate it.

For 2024 I hope we can talk less about decentralization and more about democratization.
Decentralization sounds nice, is sometimes the right approach but is also tech's version of "the market is gonna fix this". Way more interested in finding more robust ways of doing democracy on, with and to the platforms we inhabit.
