A smart TV? Reflash it with FOSS firmware, which removes tracking, calls to the manufacturer's servers, and any Internet-connected services that you don't want?

A printer? It's now yours. No ink subscription, or need for an app to print remotely.

There are lots of straightforward ways to improve it, many of which don't even require improvements to the software. And there are also opportunities to make creating, customizing, and connecting instances easier.

As you might expect, corporations don't like torts.

"Tort reform" has been a Republican calling card for decades. What tort reform actually means is restricting your right to go to court, especially against corporations.

For example, "tort reform" in Michigan has prevented people there from suing Merck for selling a pill that caused strokes or suing Purdue/the Sacklers for pushing opioids.

The conservative legislation-peddling outfit ALEC has been pushing these kinds of laws for years.

Twelve years later, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce created its own “tort reform” branch, the Institute for Legal Reform, which is now one of the largest lobbying groups in the country. Around that time, small and seemingly grassroots tort reform groups cropped up, too. But these, too, were funded by corporations—in the guise of tax-exempt advocacy groups][5] ([remote][6])

• The Michigan Product Liability Act, for example, provides pharmaceutical companies with widespread immunity from being sued by people hurt by their products. It says that you cannot sue a drug manufacturer for unintentional harm caused by a drug if federal regulators approved the drug. That was enough to stop even a $20 million lawsuit filed by the state attorney general against the drug manufacturer Merck for selling an arthritis pill that caused heart attacks and strokes. And it’s why countless victims of the opioid epidemic in Michigan are struggling to sue Purdue Pharma today. (remote)

That's it. That's the pitch. I would buy the out of this company if their electronic gadgets were even half way decent, and repairable.

Electronic, no wifi, regular screws to open it up. That's it. Do those three things, and you can be sold by this store.

I will pay this business to curate and find these devices for me.

Speaking of complex systems; today's systems are so complicated, both in terms of overarching societal, financial, and political systems as well as the ones that fit into our pocket and allow access, that we have entered what is basically a new age of superstition.

It not only yields new rituals that are essentially the old with new ingredients, but also contributes to a sense of being overwhelmed at all times, which in turn leads to a retreat into an idealised past in which things were supposedly simple.

That is only going to get worse, in the next decade or so, in no small part because some are actively trying to make it so.
