It's been decades since I heard the Cliff Richard song 'Living Doll'. I never registered this chorus at the time:

I'm gonna lock her up in a trunk
So no big hunk
Can steal her away from me."
At some point in recent history, that sentiment must have sounded normal.

Every single person at the Capitol today was there in order to engage in domestic terrorism and an attempted white supremacist insurrectionist coup.

Every single person on the Capitol grounds is a white supremacist terrorist. Every single one.

And let us all be abundantly clear, if these people were not white, they would be dead.”

We ignore the white supremacy of the thing at our peril.

when I worked on a mobile crisis intervention team in the 70s, I used to take folks like this to the ER for psychiatric evaluation… to the Emergency Room, not to the White House.

if this messianic self-image does not put off actual Christians, then I do not know what will… to say “G*d speaks to me” is one thing, to say “I am the New Messiah sent by G*d” is quite another.

Even if you only compare focal length, which is a characteristic of the lens, you will get very different results.

Photography is not an objective view of reality.

Smart phone focal lengths are generally unkind.

You know what would be nice?

An "open firmware" project, where people produce and share FOSS firmware for common household devices, replacing the manufacturer's firmware with a decrapified version.

A smart TV? Reflash it with FOSS firmware, which removes tracking, calls to the manufacturer's servers, and any Internet-connected services that you don't want?

A printer? It's now yours. No ink subscription, or need for an app to print remotely.

And so on.

A man can dream, eh.

There's likely to be a lot of moving between instances as people and instances sort themselves out into the free fediverses and Meta's fediverses -- and today, moving accounts on the fediverse today. There are lots of straightforward ways to improve it, many of which don't even require improvements to the software. And there are also opportunities to make creating, customizing, and connecting instances easier.

As you might expect, corporations don't like torts.

"Tort reform" has been a Republican calling card for decades. What tort reform actually means is restricting your right to go to court, especially against corporations.

For example, "tort reform" in Michigan has prevented people there from suing Merck for selling a pill that caused strokes or suing Purdue/the Sacklers for pushing opioids.

The conservative legislation-peddling outfit ALEC has been pushing these kinds of laws for years.

Attachments:

  • [But today, people file fewer and fewer tort lawsuits, and more courts seal documents in the cases that do make their way through. In 1993, around ten in 1,000 people filed a tort suit; in 2015, fewer than two in 1,000 did—a difference of 1.7 million cases. The reason for this decline is laws that restrict your right to go to court, particularly if you are in an accident caused by a corporation. These restrictions are known as “tort reform.”
Tort reform is a nefarious bit of wordplay—it sounds like a good thing, doesn’t it?

It is not. Tort reform is a euphemism for an infringement on your right to sue in civil court. The wordplay and the reforms are both crafted by the people who profit from that infringement.

In 1986, a few hundred of the largest corporations in the United States, together with the insurance industry, formed the American Tort Reform Association. Twelve years later, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce created its own “tort reform” branch, the Institute for Legal Reform, which is now one of the largest lobbying groups in the country. Around that time, small and seemingly grassroots tort reform groups cropped up, too. But these, too, were funded by corporations—in the guise of tax-exempt advocacy groups][5] ([remote][6])
