JS8 experiment/learn group @ROCDIGI starting up tonight

first mtg: 9pm East Coast US time, Tuesday 9 JAN 2024, at the 20m meeting freq (14.0780MHz)
weekly mtgs thereafter, same time/place/freq

the idea is to establish a weekly net to explore the possibilities in JS8 with others, centered around but not limited to the Rochester NY area. feel free to join us no matter your location, it will be more fun with a good turnout to explore things like automated checkins and message relaying.

Protocols, Not Platforms (2019):

Admitting copyright infringement, but framing it as inevitable, is an attempt to change the narrative, and we should see it clearly as such.

It probably means OpenAI has more skeletons to hide, and it wants us thinking the corpses naturally belong in the closet before we stumble upon them.

The reader and input stack have been ported, which is basically everything. There's still some entry points in C++ (PR being reviewed) and test helper binary (might make a good external contribution as it's entirely self-contained), but almost all of the C++ is gone, and with it large chunks of the FFI.

Now we just have the second 90% to go - making sure this rewritten fish is portable and distributable!

In my post, I mention two words that I feel have important definitions— #GreenSpaces and #SocialWeb.

I'm still learning what those terms mean as defined by @hrheingold and I kinda want to evangelize them? I don't know what that means yet, but the urge is there.

Anyway, I wrote about why it feels like all the cool websites have disappeared. The good news is, there's a whole other web outside #Threads and #Instagram. And it's really cool.

Agree that the discourse driven by these stats is frequently reductionistic and even misguided. There's a certain type on here who celebrates when the numbers suddenly jump, even while a spambot wave besieges everyone. Um...

Ok. Hear me out. How would this work on a platform like #Mastodon where everyone uses illustrated profile pictures and obscure sites to demonstrate their digital identities? #LinksFromJason

@fromjason I kept several sites where I shared my thoughts on weird things. And they all withered as people’s attention span shriveled and died. They didn’t want anything thoughtful, anything with words and ideas, or critical thinking. I do hope they come back. I’m still here. But my stats are usually only in 2 digits, not 4 or 5 like the old days.

And right there is one of the largest statistical problems facing the #Fediverse

Without a clear-cut, complete description of its methodology FediDB is at best noise when it comes to numbers

I use it extensively to research instance names and what distro they use, but MAU and Total Users are suspect at best

I've always suspected that Total Users are simply "accounts created" but so what?

That would be meaningless if they're dormant placeholders

Improve your mask!

Cloth: Very Poor. Skip this. All we had at start but poor protection. Stops droplets but not aerosol. Rubs on nose so less comfortable.

Surgical: Poor. Designed for droplets, not aerosol. Loose fitting. Leaks heavily on sides. Rubs on nose so less comfortable.

KN95: Better. Respirator. Much better than surgical. Ear loops means there can be some leakage on sides. Proper fit doesn't rub nose.

N95: Best. Respirator. Headbands seal better than ear loops. Fit test for better protection.

Get a good mask that fits your face and that you will wear. KN95 and N95 can be reused. Assign different mask per day of the week. Good until dirty or elastic issues. Avoid handling front of mask after wearing.
