I'm very excited to announce the first column of my "Decay Theory" series for Atlas Obscura. This one's about the death of the suburban American shopping mall. It's easy to write off the closure of malls as the result of online shopping - but their fate was likely sealed years before Amazon became the brick and mortar shredding juggernaut it is today. Here's the link! https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-life-and-death-of-the-suburban-american-mall

I’ve been “Image-Quote-Posting” for many months. You know how many complaints I’ve heard about it? Not even one. Why? Because quoted posts in any form make it so much easer to consume a referral to something. Having to visit a link or thread to get the gist of a reference is just inefficient and silly. Resistance to QPs was always contrived for a few reasons, none of them good ones. It was a bad decision that hurt the fediverse, imo.

Okay, so people are encouraging me to post more here, but maybe to ignore the replies... Today, I am excited to reveal that my macOS Mastodon client is called Oliphaunt and here is the public TestFlight link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/QLqIRNwe
Please remember that it is a beta, so it is a work-in-progress and expect some bugs here and there. Some features are not fully implemented and I am aware of some of them and probably forgot others. 🤭
I would really appreciate your feedback. Please share your feedback on GitHub, https://github.com/anosidium/Oliphaunt-Feedback-And-Support

More good analysis of the Substack situation from @mmasnick
As a fan of decentralised systems, I like this part:
"Running a private website is all about tradeoffs. You have to make lots of choices, and those choices are difficult and are guaranteed to piss off many, many people (no matter what you do). For what it’s worth, this is still why I think a protocol-based solution should beat a centralized solution every time, because with protocols you can setup a variety of approaches and let people figure out what works best, rather than relying on one centralized system."Feeling good about moving my newsletter off Substack this week.
