This is from one that's near 50 years old and explains succinctly why replacing humans with AI is bullshit--even if the AI can think on the same level as humans (current AIs can't, and will likely never be able to).

(Weizenbaum was a computer science professor at MIT and famously invented the ELIZA bot, so yes, he knows what he's talking about.)

THIS IS WHY REPUBLICANS THINK THE VOTE IS RIGGED.

Because THEY rig the vote.

A week after charges were dropped against a former election chief in Virginia, county officials have now admitted they underreported roughly 4,000 votes in the 2020 election for now-President Joe Biden.

A few years ago I was honored with the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization, a thrill because I admired his willingness & ability to communicate science to the public at a time when scientists weren't encouraged to speak out or rewarded for doing so.

But he also said things that, even today, resonate deeply in our present political crises. Here's one of those things relevant to today's Republican party.

interesting... testing on 6m-80m JS8, and only 40m causes (momentary) noise on the external computer speakers. I *did* only add the one additional toroid 🍩 (on the cable connecting the pair of stereo external computer speakers), and the speakers *do* already have one on the USB power line and they *are* supposed to be for use outdoors (admittedly, with an FM voice rig), but still a pain

I'm severely colourblind - my eyes can hardly detect red light at all.
So, working in web development, picking colour schemes is hard.
There are tools around to help you pick accessible colour schemes, but they assume that you can tell by looking that a colour is the one you want, and the only information you need the computer to calculate is the contrast ratio.
I realised I need a tool that will take the name of a colour and find a shade that gives a target contrast ratio.

Here it is: https://colourblind-palette-maker.glitch.me/

It uses the new APCA perceptual contrast algorithm and the Oklab colour space to help me find colours that people with better colour vision will interpret correctly, while ensuring there's good contrast for as many people as possible.

Something specific brought this to mind, but you can imagine this applying to any number of situations. And I'll just add (free from context I know) that it doesn't matter how caring or good the people working for that big company are when they do this. What matters is the structure and purpose of the company they work for. We spend so much time asking whether employees are good people (yes usually) and not nearly enough time asking whether the institution that directs their work is good.

RVF found a clever way to skirt Arizona regulations about having a water supply for new development. Then they discovered, to their total surprise, that even if you find a loophole in the law... humans still need water.

Like the ant and the grasshopper, they were relying on others who planned better than they did. For several years, they were parasitizing the water supply of the neighboring town of Scottsdale, until Scottsdale had enough and cut them off.
