oh yay, we likes it when things "just work"... esp in a #Rust program ;^}
so far, I am hating building & integrating GUIs with #Rust using the @TauriApps libraries less than anything else I have tried. I can save/restore window state, separate the presentation layer into HTML & CSS, use ECMAScript to manage interaction, separate the application logic into #Rust, and check for the existence of a file & persist stuff (like an API key) into it without too much gnashing of teeth.
life is good.

Yesterday we released the first numbered version of Surfer, an extensible waveform viewer that runs everywhere 🎉
The big new thing for 0.1.0 is a brand new waveform library written by @ekiwi which supports FSTs, and is much more efficient at handling VCDs than the previous lib. Startup time on a 7GB vcd went from 2 minutes to 6 seconds on my machine 🔥
In the future we'll do releases every 6 weeks. Read more about 0.1 at https://blog.surfer-project.org/v0-1-0/

Interestingly, the .af NIC just suspended inet.af, too. It used to host Go modules. This suggests queer.af maybe wasn't specifically targeted for being LGBTQ+ friendly, but for being unrelated to Afghanistan.

What Pick-up Trucks and SUVs were for Big Oil, Artificial Intelligence is for #Google, #Microsoft, #Amazon, and #Meta.
All they need to do is sell Americans on the gas guzzler. And they'll spend billions to do just that.
The big three hyper scalers control two thirds of the Cloud Computing market. Throw in Meta, and now you have most of the internet's infrastructure represented. That includes data centers *and* deep sea cabling.
They want data-hungry consumers.

This 2009 article almost reads like a proposal specifically for #Threads and the team just ran with it lol
For context, McKinsey is a huge lobbying firm with a board seat at #Meta.

Firechat allowed users to communicate and send files to one other within 200 feet, without an internet connection.

The app and the company behind it, Open Garden, sort just disappears around 2018. Then reappears in 2019 for a brief moment selling some crypto WiFi scam.

Yesterday my wife had trouble with a youtube video she was trying to watch. It kept stopping at a specific point and she couldn't advance beyond it. It was a video lecture for a class she is taking at the community college. I was able to bypass whatever the issue was by using yt-dlp, but it got me thinking about how these private services become de facto public infrastructure without us really giving it any thought.
