I guess this stuff is plenty obscure, huh?

So, folks, there's a new browser engine dropped (a while ago, actually). It isn't based on WebKit and it isn't based on Firefox, it is written from scratch for a hobbyist operating system SerenityOS by some awesome/crazy people. The browser, called Ladybird, actually can be compiled for Windows, Linux, Mac, OpenIndiana and Android.

It can pass Acid3 and render Github page well (note that Firefox and Chrome circa 2018 cannot do that!), and it has decent JS and afaik wasm support.

Their site is https://ladybird.dev/

I am not related to the project in any way, just amazed that it exist, and I think it deserves more love and publicity. And optimizations for low-end computers. And privacy features. And so on!

people who say "mozilla should just invest completely in making a fast lightweight web browser and they'll regain their marketshare" are sadly mistaken

out of all the history of software displacing other software i've seen, it is almost never about quantitative improvements ("20% faster", "10% less battery consumption", etc.)

if that were the case, desktop linux wouldn't be stuck at 3% market share

usually it is either about some sort of killer feature (like when IE was dethroned by firefox for having tabs or in some places by opera for being optimized for slow internet connections)

or about being the first in a certain niche (like how smartphone-targeted messengers displaced old IM apps like AOL, ICQ, MSN etc. by being better-suited for smartphones and having an easy phone-number-based way to keep contacts, even though those previous protocols actually had more features

maybe the folks at mozilla are foolish for chasing trends, but i don't know what else i would do in their place

Girl scout cookies generate ~$800 million a year in revenue. It's a big business.

Am I saying that girl scouts shouldn't be allowed to sell cookies? No! Do all that stuff! I like high school bake sales too! Raise money for homecoming!

But don't act like it's somehow different from Black kids trying to sell you candy bars in the parking lot. Don't act like it's nefarious when you see a car with the Black parents at the end of the parking lot. It's not. The girl scout's parents are close by too.

This paper titled “Methodological Irregularities in Programming-Language Research” does not mince its words.

Substantial industry and government investments in software are at risk due to changes in the underlying programming languages, despite the fact that such changes have no empirically verified benefits. One way to address this problem is to establish rigorous evidence standards like those in medicine and other sciences.

I am very proud to present the results of my latest project...

...the first-ever fully documented and annotated disassembly of Lander on the Acorn Archimedes.

Lander was the very first game released for the ARM platform, and is arguably the only game ever written explicitly for the original ARM1 processor (there are famously no MUL instructions in there). And, of course, it's the second bona fide classic from the genius of David Braben, as this is the game he wrote next after his astonishing work on Elite.

I will be adding a number of deep dives to the site over the coming weeks, but for now, I hope you enjoy the results, which you can see here:

https://lander.bbcelite.com

And as always there is also a GitHub repository containing fully buildable source code that you can play with:

https://github.com/markmoxon/archimedes-lander

I hope you like it!

I go back and forth over how much I'm actually enjoying this game in the long run.

The setting is cool, but the game only runs at 2 speeds and there are a lot of common actions that take 30 seconds on the fastest speed. It puts a hard limit on how quickly you can actually get anything done, and a run of a few hours can be ended or seriously impeded with just a few unfortunate draws

I wanted to do a Heart-based cult because they're good at covering up crimes, but it took ages for me to actually find a piece of starting lore and a Heart-aligned recruit.

And then after a run of bad luck, she got sent to forever-jail before I could even promote her all the way!
