Figured out a neat thing where I was able to add a new "editor component" in the Decap CMS I have hooked up to my friend's Jekyll blog. He can now add nice captioned images through inline HTML blocks without having to know any code snippets. I think I'm going to write up how it works, because I couldn't find much when I was working on it!

Like, how can Reddit sell our data for $60 million, but we as indie writers and creators have to accept that our work will be stolen because it's posted on the "open web"?

Which, by the way, my work is published on my private blog. I pay rent and everything. There's nothing public or open about it, other than as an excuse for corps and scrapers to steal my shit.

Honest question— Reddit just signed a multimillion dollar deal with OpenAI to train on our data. Reddit's content license allowed them to negotiate this deal.

So where's the license for personal blogs to protect our writing? And why aren't any open web advocates vigorously pointing to such a license?

We can't have an independent web if we don't independently own how our published work is used.

I had the tab open for months, and finally bought my first book and signed up w/ Tertulia.com—a "co-op bookstore."

"Tertulia is co-owned by our co-op members, a community of avid readers. This means that we put the interests of readers, authors, and a healthy book ecosystem first."

It costs $25/year for free shipping & 20% off retail price. Which beats Amazon prime (if all you're buying is books).

I'm curious to see how this goes. Anyone else a member?

From 1987 to 1992 Xerox PARC ran the Colab (Electronic Meeting Room) project to study how computer technologies could support face-to-face-meetings. This is obscene. JS payloads this big are just outright broken on low- to mid-range devices. Here I am, worrying about every K that ends up in the final project payload, and these assholes are just outright shipping a dozen MB to every visitor. https://tonsky.me/blog/js-bloat/

American political coverage is like:

[DEMOCRAT] This person is kind of old, or maybe they wore an outfit some people didn't like once. They also possibly had consensual sex with another adult at some point. How can rural voters trust them?

[REPUBLICAN] Tom Slaver believes women and Black people shouldn't be allowed to vote, and that we should give babies guns, abolish democracy, and imprison anyone who reads a book that isn't the Bible. Why do Democrats hate this kind, misunderstood man?
