We've updated the rules of our flagship server mastodon.social today. Most are the same with some clarifications, but one rule is new: Content created by others must be attributed, and use of AI must be disclosed. Profiles that only post AI-generated content will not be tolerated.

This new Apple love for web apps is somewhat surprising so soon after some naughty boys from, er, Apple tried to sneak out and drown Home Screen Apps in a bucket without telling anyone, then bawled "The EU made me do it!" when they were caught. https://brucelawson.co.uk/2024/happy-dma-day-to-all/

We asked Apple why their compliance report is only 12 pages (Microsoft was 421pp, Google's was 221pp). They replied that it's very clear and everyone understands what they're doing to comply with DMA.
I'm sure PWA owners, devs and users in the EU are enormously grateful for Apple's clarity over the last few weeks on what they're doing to comply with the DMA.

It's gray areas and fine lines all over. But when you scrutinize closely, you'll start to see the unstated agendas and motivations along those lines, and you might want to add that to your analysis when adopting a piece of tech.

A thing to keep in mind when evaluating the latest fashions in tech is that two of the problems the aforementioned groups have is "how do we get people to pay for this thing?" and "how do we hire people already trained in our tech stack?" So a lot of tech, including open source (especially open source), is released in a way to entice you to sign up to add to revenue or released to get you to use it and train yourself and others.
